In the lush green lap of nature lies Satkosia Gorge Wildlife Sanctuary. Spread magnificently along the gorge of river Mahanadi, is one of the beautiful places to get lost. Satkosia Gorge Wildlife Sanctuary is spread beautifully on both sides of 22 KM long gorge of river Mahanadi. Mahanadi cuts across eastern ghats at Satkosia Gorge Wildlife Sanctuary. Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary covers an area of 795.59 sq. km. In 2007 of Satkosia Gorge Wildlife Sanctuary and the adjacent Baisipalli Wildlife Sanctuary were combined together and declared as Saktosia Tiger Reserve.
There are many places inside the Satkosia Gorge Wildlife Sanctuary, which attract nature lovers, across the globe. Chhotkei, Tarava, Baghamunda, Tikarpada are among few to be named. Tikarpada is the most visited places in the sanctuary.
Tikarpada lies at a distance of 199 KM from the state capital, Bhubaneswar and 66km district headquarter, Angul. The entry point to Satkosia Tiger reserve is Pampasar, which is 12 KM from Angul.
The Satkosia Tiger Reserve is home to some magnificent fauna such as tigers, leopards, gaurs, sambal, spotted deer, four horned antelopes, sloths, gharial, Mugger crocodile and rare freshwater turtles like Chitra indica and Trionyx ( Aspidiretes gangeticus ).
Satkosia Gorge Wildlife Sanctuary has been close to me and I have numerous opportunities and reason to visit Satkosia Tiger Reserve, during one of such visits I meet a villager at Tikarpada who narrated a tale of a tiger, which was word of mouth then (which found to be true and in the news). As a part of the inter-state tiger relocation project, 2 nos. of the tiger were relocated from Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh. They were one male (Kanha) and one female (Sundari).
When the Tigers were released in the forest, a tigress had been already present in the Satkosia Tiger Reserve. The male, named as Kanha went for tigress already present in the forest, formed a pair and went for mating. And for most of the time, they stay in the dense forest. Whereas female tigress, named as Sundari started living closer to human settlement inside the Tiger Reserve. Then the wildlife encounter between humans and tiger happened to occur frequently in the Tiger Reserve and Sundari killed 2 human and couple of domestic animals (cows, goats, etc.).
After the wildlife encounter, villagers living inside the reserve started developing pressure on the administration and wildlife authorities to relocate Sundari. Under huge pressure, the administration and wildlife authorities, tranquilize Sundari to capture, with destiny and the future unknown.
Whereas, as nature lover all I wish, count of tiger increase in near future.
